What Is Window Glazing?

Window glazing is the glass inside a window. It can be single glazed, double-glazed, or triple glazed. At the same time, the window glazing can be used to refer to the putty tasked with holding the glass in place.

Single Glazed Windows

Also called single-pane windows, single glazed windows are the least efficient option on the market. The one layer of glass does very little to protect the structure from fluctuating cold and hot outdoor temperatures. Previously, single glazed windows were the only option, but today these types of windows are relatively uncommon due to the fact they offer little to no insulation.

Double Glazed Windows

Double glazed windows are more efficient and a more cost-effective option. Most of the windows sold today will fall into this category. Also called double-pane or dual-pane windows, double-glazed windows are composed of two sheets of glass with a spacer in the middle.

Usually, the space in the middle is filled with a gas, such as argon. Compared to air, argon is a better insulator and a poor conductor of heat. Over long periods of time, however, the gas in double-glazed windows can leak out, which means it may need to be refilled.

Triple Glaze Window

Made up of three sheets of clear glass, triple glazed windows also have a gas-filled space between the panes. These types of windows are the most efficient type of windows on the market. Boasting thick construction, the extra weight of these windows and higher cost make them less popular among homeowners.

What Is Low-E Glass?

Low-Emissivity glass or Low-E glass is a type of glass that has been coated in metallic oxide. It's an invisible layer that reflects UV rays back into the atmosphere and prevents heat from passing through the glass.

Low-E glass can be used on the double as well as triple-glazed windows to bolster the efficiency without adding to the window's weight. A few key benefits of windows with Low-E glass include:

  • Reduce susceptibility to fading
  • Protect occupants from the sun's harmful UV rays
  • Protect art and other types of valuables from rays of the sun
